Yovo, Yovo, Bon Soir
Gobelin woven tapestry mounted on frame

Children followed foreignors chanting yovo, yovo, bon soir, ça va bien, merci mimicking my efforts to speak French. Many children had been told by grown-ups to behave or they would be taken away by these strangers. The child in this tapestry was terrified when he saw me as I was walking in the hills above Amou-oblo, where I lived in Togo. The image of his fear and distrust stayed with me until I learned how to weave and capture that moment.
